Mission Statement

The primary purpose of the Missouri State Council of the International Reading Association is to actively promote a higher level of literacy for all citizens of Missouri. The role of the Missouri State Council of the IRA is to provide leadership to help the forty plus local councils throughout the state to achieve the purpose of the association through
		expanded emphasis on classroom research;
		interpretation of research to practice;
		development of materials to promote parental awareness of the importance of their role in the literacy development of children;
		involvement in community and international literacy projects for the homeless at-risk, and adult learners;
		participation in literacy projects such as Newspapers in Education Week, Family Literacy, Young Authors and Missouri Reading week; and
		communication with the State Department of Education, the State Board of Education and other professional organizations to express viewpoints and concerns in matters which affect the quality of education.

The Yearbook for Council Leaders will provide members with:
		1. a comprehensive overview of Missouri State Council activities;
		2. a resource for names, addresses, and telephone numbers;
		3. an outline of the Missouri State Council organizational structure; and
		4. other useful information for state and local council leaders.

The Yearbook is intended to be a useful guide for officers and committee chairs of the Missouri State Council of the International Reading Association.

The shared leadership of the Board of Directors and the State Committee Chairs of the Missouri State Council of the International Reading Association is the means by which we are able to reach for and obtain in part our lofty purpose of a higher level of literacy for the citizens of Missouri. Your efforts in behalf of the association are hereby acknowledged.
